The Action of Aspirin in Preventing the Niacin Flush and its Relevance to the Antischizophrenic Action of Megadose Niacin
نویسنده
چکیده
Aspirin has been observed to block or attenuate the flush reaction caused by niacin in 90 percent of a group of schizophrenic and nonschizophrenic outpatients. The patients were not treated with tranquilizers or antiinflammatory agents concurrently. The basis for this phenomenon, the blocking of the niacin flush by aspirin, is probably due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by aspirin. In addition inhibition of bradykinin by aspirin may also suppress the flush. The various components of the inflammatory system are briefly described, and their relationship to the flush response is discussed. It is speculated that continued megadose niacin therapy leads to depletion of bradykinin and histamine and a small increase in prostaglandins, particularly of the E type. These are known to exert an inhibitory

Predictive Value of Niacin Skin Sensitivity Test for the Diagnosis of Schizophrenia
Objective: To investigate niacin sensitivity in schizophrenia patients, meeting DSM-5 criteria for schizophrenia, as well as to healthy controls (HC) in order to examine the accuracy of niacin skin test in these patients. Methods: this was a diagnostic test accuracy study that conducted in 2018, Zanjan, Iran. We applied niacin patches of three concentrations (0.001 M, 0.01 M, and 0.1 M) to the...

There are many factors that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, and a prominent factor among these is dyslipidemia. The following literature review focuses on the use of niacin therapy in order to treat dyslipidemia and how to control the associated "niacin flush." The associated studies gathered are reviews and randomized control trials. They were obtained by using electronic searches...
متن کاملThe flavonoid luteolin inhibits niacin-induced flush.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Sustained release niacin effectively lowers serum cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides, while raising HDL. However, 75% of patients experience cutaneous warmth and itching known as flush, leading to discontinuation. Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) reduces this flush only by about 30%, presumably through decreasing prostaglandin D2 (PGD2). We investigated whether niacin-induc...
